Funny thing is that downloading from public trackers is actually the most dangerous thing you can do.. your IP is totally exposed as there is no real anonymity in Bittorrent.. everyone can see you.
Same with Emule.

With private trackers you have atleast some "safety" since only the ones registered in that community can see your IP.. and if there's certain safety-precations on that site then the chance of law-enforcement agencies seeing your IP downloading stuff will decrease dramatically.

Impossible to be 100% safe anywhere tho..

Except for the last sentence I would say: Nonsense.
True everybody can see my IP. But it is hard to say, if tomorrow the same IP is the same person. Or if two IPs are the same person. Private trackers have even less "safety". First every idiot and his grandmother can register without problems. I suppose even MPAA moles should be with some help able to do so. Second when the logs are confiscated, they contain much more valuable information than 'IP <foo> downloaded <bar>'.

Then how is it that everyone getting a letter from theyr ISP about downloading illegal movies have gotten them through open trackers?.... I know people who got letters from downloading Friday the 13th's through open trackers.

That has never happened to anyone at CM's or DV's.. or other closed trackers nomatter what stuff ;)

I got one from downloading Friday the 13th on emule on xmas day last year
Wouldn't have minded but it was Friday the 13th 3, and that movie bites

bayTSP, the paramount people, only use a set number of machines, so they'll go after the biggest trackers and then have a client on each of the big p2p networks.

Precicely.. so in conclusion; Smaller private trackers are hell-of-a-lot safer!

Someone should make some good SSL-Encrypted emule/bittorrent clients.. encrypt all traffic.

Why not register a gmail and then setup web forwarding or something to that degree, if your worried?

Oh please, anonymity via email is almost impossible. You just increase your footprint. The only thing which is a little bit protection is that it usually does not pay to find the person behind an email address.

spudthedestroyer wrote:
Since gmail offer, pop and addressforwarding now its a decent choice. That way if you thing the boogeyman's after you. Just login to gmail and cancel the forwards. Don't know what anyone would really do with an email address though.

Same what anyone would want with information who is behind an IP?

spudthedestroyer wrote:

Of course, I do neither, but I regularly check my email and download it via pop. Do you think this is not traceable?

The difference is, that with an IP they can log what I shared during the time they logged. With information from you and to a much higher extent with information from CM they might (don't know of course what the log exactly) get a list with a history of my IPs, what and how much I uploaded/downloaded for years.

Does this mean I don't have to obey share ratios? You delete it each day, so you cannot see what I uploaded the day before anyways. :-P

Oh.... it keeps the upload/download numbers as that goes outside the normal log and is saved in your stats-profile.
But it does not say anywhere what those numbers/amounts was used for :)

For all we know you could have downloaded 20 Linux ISO's or thousands of the abandonware games that has been posted :)

Ok, then I will download a Linux ISO from you, keep my upload open forever, but when I dl the newest DVD-screener from you, I stop the upload the second I got the last bit. Hey, my stats-profile would still look good.

PC_Arcade, Decypher, you are soooo mean (especially PC_Arcade) ;-)

But if he only counts a general upload/download rate, the system can be cheated.
If he counts
File1 -> u/d
File2 -> u/d
...

The again a correlation of what and how much I uploaded could be done.

And then point them to our site as an example.

I'm sure that would go down well

they hate us..... and we hate them... with their compact disks and their stereo-blasters. :wacky:
In my day we mined for coal and I didn't hear anyone complain about it... apart from steve, but he had a bad back and had to be shot!

Most people just don't have the patience for edonkey... actually, thats what I always thought, but given that it took over from kazaa I guess I was dead wrong. None the less, I think that will go down like a tonne of bricks me old screamus ;)

This is getting a bit deep for me LOL

From a PERSONAL POV I hate trackers that try to enforce a ratio, I always, without fail upload more than I download.

I have, in the last month, downloaded 17 gig, and have upped, bearing in mind it has been a bit quiet, around 25 gig. The problem is that almost all of the upload is STR stuff, I cannot manage to keep this up with STR and also share back 100% of what I down, just cannot be done with my current limitations of computer time and bandwidth.

I aint gonna get in a bitch slapping contest with anyone over this. If a registered tracker said I downed a 1.4 gig 2 disk rip of something but only managed a 700 meg share back then tough shit, my bandwidth goes on bringing new releases to the community, and if they still bitch then they can fuck right off.

Some of the registered trackers I use complain about my ratio, so fucking what, I spend alot of time, and almost all of my upstream, so half these wankers can download my stuff and then DC str8 away cos they have to try and share mostly ion there registered tracker. That IS fucking annoying.

To quote Spud "WTF?"

This thread is getting silly, Wargand, your opinions are respected, and in some respects echoed by myself.

Mr Deadlive, we get on well so I have no inclination to fall out with you over this.

Tifa, I do not really know you, but do not wish to fall out over this, I am just putting my POV across, maybe my idea's are diferent, maybe not, but either way I respect your opinion.

BTW, just so I do not spend all my time respecting ppl, I am gonna burn Satans house down, should keep the cosmic scales balanced up

Ok, this is always a good and sensible idea. Could we now start the discussion whether or not we allow him to leave it before we burn it?
