I always do a verfication when copying to CD or DVD, just wondering if I am the norm or does no one else do this. Makes me feel more secure, but obviously increases the 'burn' time.

I usually do it too, unless I'm in a hurry and/or I'm using quality discs and/or I'm not going to delete what I burn.

I always verify all my HHAH/Avi burns, as better safe then sorry
I would say it's the norm, especially if you don't have a robust burner like a pioneer, and you're using an NEC like I was for a while

I don't normally, however, I would recommend a program called CDcheck (which was at first crappy to tell the truth) to do this.
I've got a pioneer 108, and its barely let me down.

I never verify and I have a NEC. I had never noticed a problem, yet. Perhaps the reason is that I always burn with speed 2?

I don't trust anything let alone a piece of hardware so I always copy the DVD back to another area of HD :-o

Weren't you the guy with all the bad luck with those NEC's ?
I have a 2500 and one day it turned out nothing but verification errors....I went berserk for 2 months not being able to find the cause....
For me it was the goddamm scanner software ( with imbedded burn to cd junk) - thank you HP
If it's rare and meant for archive , I ALWAYS verify...

I was, although I'm starting to hear good things about them now, I wouldn't touch NEC with a bargepole
The only thing that pisses me off about the Pioneer is a lack of firmware updates, which means that alot of 8x media will only burn @4x

I never do it.
Just play the movie from the cdr and check various ranges of playtime.
If It fails, I reburn.

I always verify, even though I use decent (not the best) CD burner and CD-R's. But, usually the Discs I burn have to wait a long time before they're used, and I've usually lost the original file by the time it's their turn to be used.

I always cancel the verification if I'm present. Never burn coasters with a Pioneer 107/108 and Datawrite Media.

So which is the best DVD R media? I'm using Memorex +R and Verbatim +R at the moment. Ended up with those because that's what was on the shelf, also +R, because my laptop is a Ricoh + drive only. However have got a Pioneer 108 in my main PC. Not had any problems (yet) with these brands with either drive.

Best media is what works for you.
Personally I use Datawrite Grey Top 8x DVD-R, previously I used Yellow Top 4x and I've NEVER had a coaster that wasn't my own fault.

no best media is quality media, deteremined by the quality of construction and lifespan. Its a technical accuracy and quality build that makes a good media, so its not a 'personal thing'.
Verbatims are obviously the best media, their price is extremely high. The most reasonably priced to quality is Datawrite -R media (Grey topped). These are cheap and are by far the highest quality media in their price bracket.
G05 is the media type you should keep an eye out for.
I would personally never use +R if you have the ability to burn -R, nothing about them is justified, not the high price nor the relative quality.
