What started out so good, with a perfect opening sequence, went into a downward spiral once a kung-fu fight scene broke out and the movie couldn't decide what genre to stick to anymore. Towards the ending it gave up all hope of gravity however, and floated off as yet another blimp thriller and a textbook example of bad directing.
A real shame it was too, as it showed such high prospects of merit and could have been deep and consequential. Some weak sceenwriting is partly to blame, but mostly it is the director who just aint ready for the heavyweights yet. Checking what he has made since, it looks like he hasn't evolved much.
The music was also used in a rather unusual fashion, meaning that it was withheld each time it should have been used to build suspence, yet there to anoy in plain, tensionless scenes. This made it all kinda quirky and you notice the film and the music sepparatly, going in different directions, and not as
one piece of art. Also a shame, since it was actually a pretty good score.
Also noteworthy is the fact that the screenwriter is the same guy who wrote Vidoq, another movie ruined by being shot in DV. Seams this guy has lots of interesting ideas, but keeps getting sabotaged by others' lack of creative vision and sence of visual beauty. (you'll never guess what the director of Vidoq has made since!!!!)
ps: this rip has dual audio with commentary, and the subs for the commentary in the subpack.
