Hey,
I unearthed my PSX, used to have an external mod for it, but lost it years ago.

I was doing some research, and what I am wondering is if you know of any "boot discs" that I could download that would work (if such thing is possible). I saw a few products out there (PS-X Change) costomer reviews SAID it worked... don't see why you couldn't find an .iso of that disc and use it...

Anyone have any experience in this? Do they even work?

No they don't work.

Chipping is the only way. AFAIK.

NOT TRUE!!!

There are some "boot disks" but you'll have to buy them...if I could I would rip one for you, but you need some other things.

Got "boot disks" for my PS2...

Yes the psx change disk does work, mate of mines got one.

You can't copy them, or do an iso, because there is some code that normal cd writers don't 'see'.

d/l a few, burnt a few, made a few coasters.Even tried to copy my mates one.
You gotta buy them, but i've seen them for about ?8 on the web.

have you tried a clone though, as in a blindwrite copy? They often copy the copyprotection too, hence why you don't need a crack ;)

The problem is that he has to manually open the psx for it to work.
He can?t open it as usual because it wouldn?t work.

There is the problem :matrix:

I think i know what you mean.

When you buy a boot disk they give you a little piece of pvp sticker which goes in the hole where the 'spike' from the lid goes from.

The PS2 thinks the lid is still shut when infact your swapping the discs over.

On a ps1 we used to use a spring which kept this button pressed.

You can't copy the disk, it's a piece of cake to open the PS2 without it "knowing"

I'll say it again. Copied disks CANNOT boot on the PS2, even the Swap magic disks, if they could, it would be a cinch to just incorporate the bootloader into ps2 game rips when the protection is removed.

The knife trick does exactly what the swap magic disk does, I use DVD regionX and a cut up credit card) to boot my copies on the ps2 :)

You read correct, although I haven't done it for a while :)
The HUGE drawback of the credit card method is that you are only able to use a disk with a TOC (table of contents) smaller than the disk you boot from, so in the case of DVD region X, you are limited to CD rips of DVD games, in order to boot DVD's you would need an action replay.

The REALLY good thing is that it doesn't invalidate your warranty either.

You just boot the DVD region X, use the credit card to open the drive, put the copy in and press start.
The credit card has to be a certain shape and there's a bit of a knack to it, but that's pretty much all there is to it and it's EXACTLY how the swap magic disks work.

I just put a chip in my ps2 when I had one, was a piece of piss. The thing is really badly designed on the inside btw, looks like it was made by some monkeys

nope, I remember right in the begining you had to use an Action Replay to boot, so you most likely got a really old chip, especially if it won't boot DVDrs since the early ones didn't.

nothing much to do apart from take out that chip and get a better one. I personally wouldn't bother, but I never used to play my ps2 hence why i sold it
