My Philips DVP-642 works almost all the time, except that the subtitle playback is stupid cuz you can't change the color of the subtitles. If you have a dark movie it's fine, but if there's white on the bottom of the screen you can't see the white subtitles.

:matrix:

But I don't know. If I had money and I could do it again, I might go Xbox.
Even though I hate M$.

Not too long ago, somebody at CM was raving about this player.

http://www.neuneo.com/products/DVD/mp4dvd_feature.asp

They said they replaced their Philips DVP-642 with it, and it's loads better. Anybody hear anything else about this? Looks solid.

Yawn

What OS you running drpoopypantz?

If you REALLY hated M$, you'd buy as many Xbox's as you could afford, as they lose money on each and every one sold :)

THAT actually costs them money as opposed to running a pirated OS.

The "I'm not buying an Xbox cos I hate M$" is not only old, but it doesn't really make any sense.

Even though I don't care for M$ at all, I'd gladly buy and mod an Xbox if I could afford it. But as it stands, $134 for the appealing-sounding standalone is a lot cheaper than a modded Xbox. Plus there's three different versions of a new Xbox coming out soon anyway.

you missed the word *allegedly* fier, everytime a company has tried a split capability console thus far, its died. Expect one main model, and then some advanced ones that aren't very popular. My expectation atm.

A). I'm running XP Pro. Microsoft made not a cent on my running this software. I didn't send them a dime, and they actually have to pay for my bandwidth usage, because I download updates.

B). Buying an Xbox does not hurt M$. THAT makes no sense. The reason they aren't achieving profitabilty with it is because of a lot of factors...Sony and Nintendo, for one. Lack of having Japanese support, for 2. Etc. etc.

C). If you want to beat M$, you have to think like M$. You think M$ cares about a 350 million dollar loss? I assure you they don't. They are spending money on this unprofitable (As yet) Xbox with their eyes on the future. The infinite possibilities of the futures of PC's and how they will interact with consoles, and etc. etc. The only possible way to defeat that is to make their losses as heavy as possible over as long a time period as possible.

Hence, never buying anything from M$.

Well, except their intellimouse. I love this mouse.

A) If you really hated Microsoft, you wouldn't use their products. Does matter if you buy it or not :D

B) It isn't the hardware where they make the profit, they make profit by selling the games. :D

C) Since most people buy prebuilt systems, they will also buy a Micorsoft license since that's OS that's supplied with those things. What OS do the people in coorperations use? They have a monopoly position if you don't count the "geeks, nerds, the brighter computer user, but have trouble playing games since there are not many games compatible with Linux". So Microsoft is here to stay (at least for quite awhile.) :D

I prefer Logitech btw, try the MX510.

B) is a common fact, they sell the hardware at a loss. That's how the console industry works. I mean the specs of the PC are outdated, but the components alone come to more than what they should. They use bog standard pc components and they loose ~?50 on each console, but that's probably gone down a lot by now.

The only one that was close to profit from the start was Gamecube and that's because it really is very, very, very neatly designed. They still had the whole design and research development costs to make up though.

On the matter of consoles there's the investment in design, there's the investment on delivery device ie. hardware and there's the profit off of software.

SRD is spot on, console manufacturors make their money on games. Console licenses mean m$ get ~40% of every game sold.

I might. I still have a lot of these Microsoft ones. I got a deal, so long as I bought 5 at once. And they last forever, so my mouse needs are pretty much satisfied for a while. I prefer Logitech too, though. I only use Logitech Keyboards.

So do most car companies sell the car itself at a loss.

Yes, but if you are advocating buying a Modded Xbox to use as an Emulator (which I don't need it for, because I have a computer) and as a standalone movie player, that's pretty expensive, is it not?

The cheapest pre-modded Xbox I have seen is $300. I can buy 3 standalone movie players for that.

What is the subtitle support like on Xbox? Can you change the font color of the subs? Cuz the one major drawback of my DVP-642 is that it's white subs, and you can't change the color, so if it's a bright scene, you can't see nothin.

Sub support is exactly the same as mplayer on the PC, as for the cost, an Xbox is ~$150, rental of splinter cell / mechassault is ~$3(?) and a memory card is $20. Just softmod it.

now your just being stupid. Of course they don't and it isn't even an analogy because its not the same situation, but they don't make money on petrol and the car is the main product. A console is the delivery device for software.

If you want an analogy, Mobile Phones are often sold at a loss if you get one on contract. Why? Because the phone itself isn't the product, the phone service is the product where they make their money. For samsung it might be their product, but the phone companies sell on these phones at a loss at the hope of getting money back on the phone calls. When the service isn't 'garantueed' to bring in a profit, ie. pay as you go, the phone is significantly more.

The people making money on the hardware are the component manufacturors, not microsoft. It takes a hell of a lot of a consoles and many, many years to make money on a console, normally at the ass end of its lifecycle. They make money off of software, a lot of money.

---

Xbox supports everything your standalone doesn't. Including advanced profile, advanced subtitle support, games, and pretty much everything you can do on your pc.

I'd add about $20 for the remote control but PCA is still being liberal with the price if your softmodding.

Softmodding has come on leaps and bounds and nowadays is pretty much the same as having a chip, they've even "virtualised" the C: drive so you can't fuck the softmod up by deleting things you shouldn't :)

I didn't comment on :

'cos it was SO stupid I thought I didn't need to

[edit]I've just bought ANOTHER Xbox for ?79 ($148.878 due to the exchange rate), I own Mechassault and a memory card and so I will have a modded Xbox that will have cost me ?79, good value in anyone's book :).

Even If I didn't own MA though, ?2 to rent it from Blockbuster, ?5 for a generic memory card (or pay Game (electronic boutique) the full whack then take it back the next day ;) ) and I would have a chipped xbox for ?85 ($160) which in plays EVERYTHING compared to a standalone that wont play all xvid/divx/MKV/OGM/etc files that exist today let alone any future standards is IMHO money bloody well spent :) [/edit]

Although I have come across a format that XBMC can't play (at the moment) and that's RV10.

But as the only movie I own in that format is DareDevil director's cut I couldn't really care less :)
