I'm making a www site at the moment that has a heap of download content (it is a online cartoon, released in Xvid format)

Anyway we are considering using bittorrent to release the files as the swarm downloading will save us lots of hosting costs in bandwidth.

Dose anyone know a faq or a www site I could go to or know themselves how you would go about doing such a thing?

Jynks

There's a massive FAQ somewhere but I don't know the url atm.

If its a professional site, you need your own tracker setup. If its not so big, then just use an existing tracker. To host your own tracker you need to find a webserver host that will let you run one and seed a torrent on.... that's will be hard if you don't own your server.

Either way, you'll need a machine seeding the content all the time.

hmmm... I knew it had to be more complicated than I thought. I was hoping that if I seed a copy on all the www site admins home servers and also on the web server itself and simply have a .torrent file it would work... I was hoping to avoid the tracker stuff.....

:(

I'll check those faqs.. thanks Spud.,. knew you'd be able to advise me.

You could also use Azureus which has it's own internal tracker in the client if you don't like posting it to other web site trackers. Then you could just post the torrent on those web servers if you wish.

That might be handy if you want to do some reading on trackers :)

In particular I think this is what your looking for:

Then you and others(if your building a community) can seed torrent files, by creating the torrent file that points to your tracker.
