Here recently I've been getting error messages when trying to playback XVID files, or at least, a good many of them. I'm not sure that it's all XVID files that I've gotten or not. Zplayer, WMP, and WinDVD all shut themselves down immediately after opening them. When I try to encode them, DVD2SVCD says it cannot decompress the frame when I go to preview.

Is there a new updated XVID codec that I should install or should I just try reinstalling the latest version?

I'm so sorry if this sounds like a really silly question. I'm still kind of feeling my way around this stuff at times.

Try to uninstall Xvid first, instead of installing the new over the old.

Have you checked the codecs thread at the top of the forum?

I'd take koff's advice, and if you don't actively encode, try the FFDshow route.

Thank you both for your advice. I got the most recent codec and installed after getting rid of my old one. It took care of it.
