From IMDB
----------------------
This is the BBC's sixth entry in their 'A Ghost Story for Christmas' series.

Whereas most of the other episodes were based on stories written by M.R James, 'The Signalman' is an adaptation of a short story by Charles Dickens.

Denholm Elliott is perfect in the title role, as a seemingly normal, rational, but lonely man stationed at a quiet railway post, who begins to hear and see a mysterious spectre, that seems to predict fatal accidents on the track. Bernard Lloyd is a traveler who befriends the signalman, and who tries to convince the terrified man that there must be a rational explanation for the spectres 'apparent' appearances.

Scenes involving the dark hooded spectre, waving its arms and crying out: "Hello, below there!" provoke genuine chills. With a brisk running time of 39 minutes, this is a well made, superbly acted and very creepy T.V adaptation of Dickens story - made at a time when the Beeb knew how to produce entertaining drama for television. Oh dear, how things have changed.

More widely screened that others in the 'Ghost' series, 'The Signalman' has been released on DVD by the BFI (British Film Institute) along with another entry in the series, 'A Warning to the Curious', which is also superb (and like 'The Signalman', is directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark). The Omnibus TV adaptation of James' 'Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad!' - curiously shortened to 'Whistle and I'll Come to You' - has also been released by the BFI as part of their archive television range. Very similar to 'A Warning to the Curious', though again, it is equally magnificent. Get them all. Hopefully it won't be too long before the rest of the 'A Ghost Story for Christmas' episodes are released.

Never heard of it, but looks very haunting. It seems UK TV produces good quality horror, some months ago I've got The Woman in Black from here and it was very well directed and acted.

I found this ed2k: Whistle.and.I'll.Come.to.You.1968.Miller.avi  [599.72 Mb] [Stats] via emule search but it doesn't have any full sources.

I don't think it was posted here though.
