Nope,They asked how to play those type of files...I was just thinking of a cheap and easy solution for someone who is new to it all.It Plays everything..unless they are wanting to play it on their comp,or TV via comp ..then that would be a different process. There are more then enough topics in this section already that explain how to do that. But for a standalone that plays pretty much any content and for the price..it is pretty hard to go wrong with that player.

Thanks for that info Dxa. Might end up getting a standalone first and never know which ones are good or not. My brother has a jvc and it doesn't play shit for mpeg 4.

I always wanted to know but do the ones ripped in xvid/divx have to be in NTSC? Or does it recognize it as just a mpeg 4 files and play both PAL and NTSC? For us in North America.

Xbox is the only way to go for standalones. I believe there's some linux os based players out that will render the current divx certified players redundant, but Xbox is still what I'd back... given the xbox2 will be out shortly, probably be dead cheap later this year too ;)

True enough, but not everyone has an Xbox.I grabbed this player last week and it works on damn near anything straight out of the box. There is a firmware upgrade patch philips put out that lets you play .sub and srt content and also updates a few things in mpeg4 playback.Plays pal and ntsc and there is a hack that you just pop into you remote control that makes it region free.Seriously, for the price....I am just in awe because honestly I wasn't expecting it to play even half my divx or xvid content.Another thing that blew me away was that it was available so readily at my nearest shopping center.
By the way, please visit PC_A's softmodded section...the man studied like a bhudist monk to put all that together and I would hate to see all his hard work for not.  As spud said that would be the ideal option but even with a walkthrough like PC_A put together some people are very intimidated on even thinking on opening up their xbox or any sort of trickery with the thing.

I think i'll try that player. I did read PCA's xbox tutorial and seems like a lot to go through to get it to work(cheers for all that work making the tutorial though). Would rather buy it already modded if i could find it here. But if not that Phillips player sounds good to me.

I LOVE my Philips DVP-642, I have 2 of them. :beerchug:

Target and K-Mart both keep them in stock near where I live.
