what speed do you burn the games in?? i would guess 2x or 4x is max if you want quality burns... this i know from psx burnt cds and movie dvds... some lasers are very picky and the quality get better when burnt on low speed....

I burnt them at 1x, 2x and 4x and never more. Now I have managed to boot a game using the Datawrite discs, and it seems that the burner you use can make a difference as I burnt a couple on one drive and they don't boot for shit even on the Datasafe discs, and when I burn the same games on another drive (NEC 3510 not sure what the other one is, I can check if needed) they do boot. But I'm still having problems anyway, i need to burn more and test to see what is the best combination of media, burner and laser for me.

I have played about 15 hours of RE4 now and had about 3 disc errors, but when I have tried again, it has managed to load past those points, and the errors are very rare. I played Viewtiful Joe 2 for a few hours and had no problems with that. Also I played a little on Mario Power Tennis, no problems with that, Tony Hawk's underground 2, no problems with that and I burnt Donkey Konga 2 but it wouldn't boot, but I forgot to check if it had it's garbaged stripped, so that might be the problem. Plus I have 2 versions of DK2, and I have a feeling that the one I burnt is the proper that was released that had been modified somehow to make it work with the loaders so that could even be the problem.

I'm thinking they can sort out the disc read errors in time. Hopefully they will get it working perfectly, they seem to be working pretty fast at updating the bios, and it's a lot better than using the loaders. If you are wondering whether or not to buy the Viper, I would say go for it. Sell your BBA/PSO and get this instead it's much better.

Anyway been playing RE4 too hard to be able to burn many games, I am loving it :matrix:

Now it seems that all my discs are working, provided I write them on a good burner and sort out wiped images etc. I tweaked my laser back up to 380 (original 480) and it hasn't given me a DRE or failed to boot a disc at all for a long time now. All my discs are booting :D
Got onto the 2nd disc of RE4 and had about 3 DREs in total from the first disc before I tweaked my laser back up, but there's plenty of savepoints anyway.

I also reburnt Donkey Konga 2 from the original release (not the modified one) and it works perfectly too. The only other problem I have encountered is the streaming audio problem, but there is a software fix for it already, but I don't want to burn patched isos if you are gonna be able to use the standard ones in a future bios.

Rumours at MaxConsole of a Viper clone coming soon, so maybe you lot can save yourself a few quid. As long as it doesn't have more features I don't really care though that I paid out for the Viper.

And PCA - I ripped myself a disc again a couple of days ago, I was right, over an hour to rip... there's a new ripper out now though (supposedly for viper but works with PSO) that claims to be able to rip a disc in 45 mins which is a little saving at least.

Now you can use Mini DVD-R's WITHOUT a mod chip :

Quote:
~ NO NEED FOR YOUR VIPER ANYMORE ~

Boot up your PSO and plug in your crossover to your BBA - Load up PSO like your streaming a normal NGC game.

Open GC-Loader-GUI.EXE choose PSUL.EXE at the top choose PSUL.EXE than choose ... on the right hand side choose SNAKE04.DOL at the bottom choose PSUL

Wait for PSO to finish spinning and swap it out with a mini dvdr or full sized dvdr.

NJOY THIS STUPID LITTLE TUTORIAL THANK YOU UTOPIA + METALCUBE + AND WHOEVER ELSE MADE THIS BIN / DOL.

On that note, Krug do you know if any of these blank disks will work on the GC?

Apparently RE4 IS WORKING with this as well :beerchug:

Here's a little bit of blurb on burning once you have the media:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/161862
Quote:
Yes this is the news very nice to see this which is cool for the people that don't have the Viper modchip.I went and started reading about this at the dextrose forum, and alot of users have said it doesn't work.I am still skeptical about this, but a tutorial has been brought up at maxconsole with the .dol file and guide to help set this solution up.The direct link to where I found the guide for this solution is here http://forums.maxconsole.com/showthread ... eadid=3893 by PHiSQuaRE.Good job to PHiSQuaRE on the guide and also supplying the tools to get started on this solution.

The tutorial by PHiSQuaRE

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
USING THE ANACONDAO4 v0.2
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by: PHiSQuaRE

Things you will need:

- A Gamecube
- An ORIGINAL copy of Phantasy Star Online episode I & II
- A Nintendo Broadband Adapter
- Either a gamebit or a melted crystal BIC pen
- Some electrical tape
- Some files (which I've included)
- A brain

1. Set up PSO and your PC to work with PSUL (there are numerous tutorials on how this is
accomplished so I won't waste time explaining it again)

2. Get your gamebit or BIC pen and open up your Gamecube by removing the four screws from
the bottom.

3. Face the Gamecube forward, remove the lid and look at the top right corner. You will
see two blue wires connected two a yellowish/brownish pcb with a black plastic prong
like device, this is the lid sensor. Take a piece of electrical tape and tape down
the two black plastic prongs.

4. Place the psul.exe and snake04.dol files somewhere easy to access from the command line,
personally I like C:/

5. At the command line type the following:

psul.exe snake04.dol

You will see the following:

PSUL 1.1 Copyright (C) 2003, Titanik of Crazy Nation

Starting server on 192.168.1.100...
Waiting for connection...

6. Turn on PSO, start an online game with your settings, let the pretty screen come up,
go towards the light....

7. You will see the dol file sent and run, the screen will go black, PSO will stop spinning,
now swap PSO with your PROPERLY burnt iso file. The disc will start spinning again, and
your game will load.

8. Enjoy this wonderful UTOPiA present.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BURNING A PROPER ISO
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To burn a proper iso, use Nero only. I haven't bothered with any other burning software
personally so I can't comment on how well it will work. Extract your ISO/GCM (if a GCM
rename the extension to ISO), open up Nero and choose Recorder->Burn Image, select your
ISO and click FINALIZE DVD. If you do not finalize the burn, your game will not load.

Additionally, some games have audio problems on the current viper bios (v0.4 as of this
FAQ) and need to be fixed using a nice little tool by LOONYCUBE called WIPED GCM FIXER
v1.4b. Only use this latest release as it is the most up to date. Generally, if your
game is under the 1.4 gigabyte mark it is a good idea to use the wiped fixer to add
garbage data that has been removed.

From personal experience, I have found that the only media that has worked well for me
is Ritek G04 Mini-DVDRs. This of course depends on the Gamecube and the laser OHMs
setting. I have had a 100% success rate with the games I have burnt and tested on this
media without tweaking the laser on either of my Gamecubes. There are tutorials out there
explaining how to tweak your laser if necessary.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SDLOADER
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not know if this method will work with the SDLoader because I don't have the hardware
to test it out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTHER RESOURCES & INFO
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The dol version of the cobra bios behaves exactly like the version running directly
off of the viper. There haven't been any improvements or changes to the loading
sequence at all.

Some more resources:

http://www.ps2nfo.com/viper.html

http://www.maxconsole.com (and the maxconsole forums)

Make sure if you are using PSOload to switch to PSUL if you plan on testing this out.To get the anaconda.Dol file along with some helpfull utilities and the actual tutorial you can get them here http://forums.maxconsole.com/attachment ... stid=31218 hope this helps some people out that don't have the ViperGC modchip.I haven't tested this yet so if anyone tests this and can supply some very good information that might help out some people trying to use this method thanks.I just thought this should be brought to attention if nobody has seen this.

Haha lucky for you lot!

As for those discs, I would recommend Datasafe and Datawrite, but Datasafe do seem to be better quality but it might just be my imagination. They seem slightly thicker, like the difference between Datawrite yellow and grey fullsize.

But you can just take your case off and try with full-size discs if you don't want to wait.

Remove your Cubes housing, on the top right side you see 2 little plastic sticks, just use a gaffertape to fix them to the back.

BTW, completed RE4.

You're going to have take your cube apart anyway aren't you to hold back the lid switch? So why not just have a quick go with a fullsize whilst you're waiting for your minis. I would do. Or am I the only impatient one?

Which discs did u order PCA?

Now I DO listen, I just do things on the cheap wherever possible ;)

you said : Datasafe (which =Prodisk s03)
I said : Bulkpaq (which =prodisk s03)

Hopefully they'll be ok :)
As for the Lid off thing, I'm not sure you DO have to take the GC apart, only the guide spud quoted has said that and I think they could be wrong.

should be ok, I don't really like Bulkpaq myself though, had bad experiences with the fullsize.

I'm pretty sure you do have to do the lidswitch, otherwise, the cube is gonna freeze up or give an error when you try to swap discs. And I bet you're gonna have to tweak your lasers too, but try it out first. I vipered 2 cubes now and had to tweak on both, but I don't think you have to knock it down too far if it's set high. Best to experiment.

How difficult is the soldering on the viper?
If I'm gonna have to open the thing up, i might as well just mod it.
