Hello. i'm new here and i hope no one minds me commenting on this old thread.

Anyway, i think Carpenter is even hugely underrated. i've seen most of his movies, and there really isn't a single one that's bad...he has his own particular style, and his movies aren't unintelligent, either, only extremely subtle in most cases.
For example, a lot of people don't like Ghosts of Mars, but it's really a question of expectations and what audiences are accustomed to...i bet it's everything he wanted to do himself. He's an old-fashioned director and modern audiences want something else, which is a shame in my opinion. But i'm also one of those who believe that in 20 years time, Ghosts of Mars will be much more appreciated, because then the audiences don't have the same expectations as today, and they can look at it without prejudices.

Someone here mentioned Argento and i should say that Argento's movies always have simply horribly stupid things in them (plot-wise, dialogue-wise and there are even some stylistic things that really don't work), not all but a lot of them...Carpenter's movies are never inane, or unthought. Of course, i understand Argento simply doesn't care about the plot that much, they are nightmares, but for me, most of the time he is the one who doesn't cut it. (i tell you, when i first saw Tenebrae and the knife spurting blood i laughed my head off at the stupidity of it)

PS: This is a great site, thank you.

Can't be bothered to read this thread, so my opinions:-

He is very often overrated, but not by me. Ppl I speak to think he is some kind of movie genius, but he aint. To me he is a guy that makes films that appeal to me, but even with me as a fan I can realise his films are, as a rule, pretty average examples quality wise.

Decent action I expect from many of his titles, and they usually deliver. Often his characters are just pure cliche, but what the fuck, when I watch his works I do so to enjoy myself, not get engrossed in a 4 hour epic about Jesus's sandal size.

My over all opinion is basically he is a guy that makes fun films to watch, not too heavy going, just a pleasant waste of time. :beerchug:

Yeah his films are OK, but he should never have teamed up with that Karen Carpenter, crap songs, crap music - sheesh ;););)

the thing > great
christine > better than "duel"
starman > didn't see dont wanna see
big trouble in little china > funniest
prince of darkness > slow but good story and it was creepy
they live > total disaster
memoirs of an invisible man > a total hollywood movie. at least it's fun.
body bags > i always enjoyed horror movies of multiple stories
in the mouth of madness > best
village of the damned > total disaster vol.2
escape from LA > not good as NY
vampires > one of the most original vampire movies. i enjoyed it.

Eh? Raised it "again"? The success of this movie is pretty much what started the slasher craze of the 80s. While Black Christmas came before it (by 4 years, even), it wasn't really noticed, and that's the only other pure "slasher" movie I can think of before Halloween.

They Live is so cool. Yeah it is a technically shit movie, but it is so muh fun to watch.

"I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick arse, and right now I'm all outta gum." A classic line that I often use when I am queued in my own bank, except I do not shoot anyone. Well, not often.

My contact lenses let me see the alien scum, they are everywhere, except that time I had to Escape from New York, then it was just human scum. :beerchug:

You can argue that, but as far as I remember there were only two on screen deaths. Plus it didn't inspire a chain of cheap imitators (William Castle's Homicide comes to mind, but nothing else).

What about Bay of Blood? Isn't that the 'original slasher'?
John Carpenter is overrated, but he brings horror to the mainstream.
Many of the 'cult' directors are overrated. Like Tobe Hooper, has made one good film (TCM) IMO, but he's well-renowned. Carpenter made The Thing which was awesome, and Halloween which was pretty good. IMO, thats it. (OK Big Trouble is fun, but not really horror). Damn, I gotta stop trolling these old threads!

I don't know if we rate him too high or not, but I do know that he has made a classic film. Halloween and, to a lesser degree, The Thing are the ones he'll be remembered for. Halloween was one of the top ten horror movies of the 70's (a good decade for American horror and film in general). Its a classic. I'm sorry if time and million crappy knock-offs has blunted the impact for you, but I was there and I can tell you that movie is magic.

top ten 70s horror movies? wow... I think that's being very kind, we're talking about the same decade right?

The 70s was a sweet decade for horror, and halloween wasn't good enough to be said in the same sentance as a lot of them.

People are way too kind to Halloween, it was never that good, although its worthy of recognition in its own right. It ain't alien, it ain't dawn of the dead, it ain't Wickerman... hell its barely even up with The Omen if you ask me... and even if your in hardened critic mode, then its a long pause before you mention their top gun, The Exorcist.

If you stick to the genre loosely it gets hammered even further down. Hollywood was in a brilliant self-inflicting harsh cinema era (which Star Wars cracked open ultimately) in the 70s and its probably the most solid decade for horror.

I always expect it highly ranked with film critics because, well they copy each other like I don't know what... especially when people go out on a limb initially in their praise, but it always suprises me when horror fans rate it so highly.

Anyway, that's my 2cents, its good, but its not top listing material. I wouldn't even consider placing it that highly anyway.
