I've just upgraded from a modem to a router and finally got to grips with port forwarding (thanks PCA) but certain sites, notably ebay (My ebay only) and gmail don't work anymore, they give the error "The connection was refused when attempting to contact...".

I guess this is to do with port forwarding, I have forwarded ports 80, 280 and 443 for both tcp and udp, are there other ports I need to forward as well?

if you access gmail with POP, you'll have to open port 110 too.

You don't need port forwarding (virtual servers, port mapping...) to browse the web or read e-mail. You only need to forward ports if your computer works as a server (mail server, web server, most P2P networks work better if your computer works as a server). If some web sites stopped working, the reason is almost certainly unrelated to port mapping. What exactly is the cause is hard to say, you didn't provide any details (What type of connection? Which provider? Which router brand and model? Any applications running? Etc.)

The connection is 512/256 with BT Yahoo using an Alcatel Speedtouch 530, no other apps open.

Thanks everyone for your help but I've sorted this now, it was Norton. Seems exiting it wasn't enough, it had to be uninstalled. Should have known, it's always bloody Norton

pepak, was quite right, standard ports are forwarded automatically, so close down any port under 1000

You'll only really need your bit torrent one (or range of ~20 if your using one that doesn't tunnel one port), 4662 and 4672 for emule, forward one port for ftp (8585 or one like this is better than 21), and you'll have it about covered.

Yep all fixed now thanks, and using AVG instead of Norton, no probs at all now
