OK, my Socket A processor (2400+) in my arcade cab just died :(

So I need a replacement and I though I may as well upgrade, but AMD socket A processors are incredible confusing ATM with higher rated semprons having slower clock speeds than lower rated XP chips, despite having less L2 cache??!!

What is the best value Socket A option ATM?

All I can tell you is that from my experience, XPs beat Semprons in both price and quality (Semprons are basically the same, but with slightly worse attributes and prices - though not always). I'm having an XP 2600 Barton in my PC for over a year now (since December 2003) and it's working like a charm, a definite improvement over XP 2400 Thoroubred, which it replaced.

Basically I'd say that the Barton XP CPUs are better value than Thorton/Thoroubred, sinced despite a slightly less speed (2600 Thoroubred is 2.087GHz and Barton is 1.917GHz) they have twice the cache (512) and a bigger FSB (333 as opposed to 266). The difference in CPU speed is very small between all models (2400 is ~2GHz and 3000 is 2.167GHz, for example) while the difference in price is rather big (still making them rather cheap, specially compared to Intel). And since the 400 FSB is available only in 3400 (and maybe in 3200, IIRC), if you're looking for a good bargain socket A CPU, I'd recommend either 2400, 2500 or 2600 Barton, maybe 2800, if the price isn't too high. Some people put 2500 Mobile over Bartons, but that's mostly because of its overclocking capabilities. Still, the Barton 2400-2600 models have a big FSB (333MHz), a lot of cache (128kb L1 & 512kb L2, 640kb in 3200 and higher, IIRC), relatively high speeds (and can still be overclocked quite high, if that's your thing, specially if you manage to find one with a low Core V - preferably ~1.45; of course the 1.65 models work perfectly and can still be overclocked - my worked for some time @2300MHz without making any fuss), don't overheat if you get a good cooler and are relatively cheap.

Unfortunately since AMD ended the XP line some time ago, it is rather hard to find an unused one or one with a warranty, but if you manage to get your hands on it, I'd say that's way better deal than a Sempron (basically the same technology, but with lower speed, less of cache, higher temperature etc. etc.).

So if you ask me - go for an XP. Of course, that's just my opinion. 8)

Yeah, that backs up what I figured, it's VERY confusing ATM though with socket A :(

Glad I could help

If the price is right, 3200+ should be the best deal.

btw AFAIR the 400MHz CPUs work with 333 (and maybe 266, though actually I doubt it) DDR RAM, unlike 333 CPUs, which only work with 333.

Out of curiosity, how much was it?

what kind of heat sink are you gonna put to cool the 3200?

AMD's run very hot and since im building up my own AMD machine from scratch Id love to know how your gonna keep it cool. Ive been leaning towards buyin a Thermalright SI-97 with Panaflo 92mm High Output w/ RPM fan.

For my CPU (later this year to be upgraded to Athlon 64 S939) I ordered Gigabyte's GH-PCU31-SD cooler. It hasn't yet arrived, so I can't tell, how it works in practice, but from what I've heard it's a great little thing (and amongst other merits, it actually fits any motherboard, unlike Zalman CNPS7000/7700-Cu, which I considered earlier).

PC_Arcade, I'm afraid that Coolermaster won't actually be enough for 3200, specially since you're going to play a lot of games on it...

That should do quite well, although a pure copper (instead of Al-Cu) version would still be better. From what I remember it's almost the same price.

Oh, and an important thing when buying a Zalman cooler - always check if it will fit your motherboard (7000(AB) models here: http://www.zalman.co.kr/product/cooler/7000(AB)_462MBlist_eng.htm ), since those things are rather big and don't fit all or may need some additional clips or some other hardware tweaking...
