Whoa, guess I should RTFM.
I've always found the s-video out pretty shit, so I assumed the S/PDIF would be an alternative that carries audio. Well, I guess it is......it just doesn't carry video.

the major use of a S/PDIF output is when you have an avi file (or a DVD) with AC3 5.1 audio and an external Dolby-Digital decoder. you can do the pass-thru of the audio stream directly into your DD set.
