This is rarely a good thing on a DVD rip, you need to read up on how to IVTC a DVD to avoid this, it's a shame, you've posted some good movies but due to problems with the rips, I'm not going to download any of them
This is a good place to start : http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=7124

From what I had read prior it always advised leaving this alone.
I am trying one with a force to see how it comes out.
At least try one and critique it for me.

I think it was in guides for DVDx when I first started using it. Sometimes a message popped up when I tried changing this number.

It should only ever be 29.971 for NTSC video, i.e if it was shot on film then it should be 23.976 fps for NTSC or 25 FPS for PAL.

Like I said I am encoding one at what you suggetsed. The reason I use Divx is my homeplayer for tv does not use xvid, just Divx.

That's fair enough although as a rule of thumb you should also be aiming for 700Mb filesize.

I agree and I try to. I used Dr. Divx. It shows file size for high quality. Sometimes it's over 700Mb and sometimes below. Here's "The Greatest Story Ever Told"
File Size 910
Divx 3
Bitrate 457
FPS 23.976
Audio
0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) CBR
44100 Hz
I was able to rip this movie but it was a bitch to encode.
I just tried encoding The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad at 23 but I had an audio synch problem. I'll try it at 29 and see what happens. It could be the DVD. We'll see.

I would STRONGLY advise against using Dr.Divx
You should use Gordian Knot or, if you really must then the next best would be AutoGK.

I know anything over 700Mb is no good for a CD. The fact is Cd burners are going the way of the wind. DvD burners are now affordable and the price of blanks are getting closes to Cds everyday. So I try to stay with making high quality avi, regardless of size. I did experiment with video files to see what would happen if I changed the settings. Making them fit 700Mb when it called for more caused the size of what you were actually seeing to decrease. Making them larger adds nothing to the quality. I rememember getting a file that I thought for sure would suck. I was amazed at the quality. If only I knew the ripper.

There are standards in ripping, aiming for 700Mb is one of them, ignore them if you want to, but it will lower the desirability of your rips.
I won't bother downloading them at random filesizes and fps rates, I'll wait for a "proper"

Are we trying to achieve best quality or standard file size? That's all I am asking.

Best quality, the guidelines are there for a reason Deadbeat wrote: | I have downloaded xvids and svcds that do not work. Verified too. |
From here?? Please point me in the direction of one, and I'm 100% sure it's a problem with your codecs. Deadbeat wrote: | I am interested in quality. Check one of my files first please. I have a friend who thinks we are all crazy. he is from old school. For him mpeg is the only way to go. |
well each to their own, but judging from the specs, these files will NOT be as good as they could be and certainly not "perfect" as you've stated in another thread.

ROTFL, I should be able to Quote: | I am putting out what the DVD offers. |
Look I've been ripping and releasing films for YEARS (although I'm not claiming to be an expert) and this statement is simply NOT TRUE. There are rules in place for DVD rips FOR A REASON. With this rip, I would have ripped at a higher resoltuon and IVTC'd it so the filesize was bigger and it had the correct number of frames per second. Deadbeat wrote: | At least download one of my files then critique. |
I don't NEED to download it to see that it could be better.

Aarrgh, I can't keep up with all your replies to yourself!!
It's not simply a matter of re-encoding so the file is larger, there are other issues as well, such as IVTC which you NEED to do for a quality rip.
I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm trying to help you spot the problems your rips currently have so you can fix them and make better rips, it's up to you whether or not you want to do that.
But don't start with the whole "you can't do better" attitude, because I assure you I can
