You have to remember these are old videos. Take for example MP3s. Something from the 60s averages 2.90 Md while something from the 90s averages 4.54 Mb. Color, sound add to size. I can make an old movie very large. Will it add to quality? No. It sounds like I am older then you. Experiment. Then come up with your conclusion. That's the fairest thing to do. Why waste hard drive if the quality is only up to a point. I like this site because it offers my favorite type of film. Hey. They are trying to close us down. Don't help them. Some movies I offer have been digitally remaster. Others not. Like "The Screaming Skull." That's all that's out there. Shoot. I have a movie called "The Return of Doctor X." Ever here of it? It starred Humphrey Bogart. It's his only horror movie. It was punishment from the studios for his complaining. It was great. Only thing is, is the quality sucks, but it is all that is offered.
I would much prefer you to review my file, then make a comment. I think if you are a moderator, it makes more sense to do it that way and shows you are fair. (The future? A video the size of a mega bit)

ROFL, Right I've had enough of this stupid converation.
I (and others in other threads) have offered you advice on how to make your rips better, if you choose to ignore that then that;s up to you, I was trying to help you, I can see it's neither wanted nor appreciated so I won't bother.

That's the problem. You think you know it all. Things change, and with computers everyday. I am going to rerip SOK for you. Download it along with original. Tell me the difference. That is a fair wager. As far as rules go, they need to be change as times change. Are we not revolutionaries?
That means we change brother as things change. Talk it over with your fellow moderators please. I know most of you do not have a DvD burner yet but it's time. Also all my movies play on my home player. It's a Lite-On.
The quality is up to the DvDs they were burned from.

I will do it at 700Mb and take same picture. Compare it. I love this. Do you know why? Newcomers are going to download just cause we are arguing.
Controversy. Cool.

I'm not really sure what's the point of this terribly stupid argument.
Deadbeat, please, try to understand: standards are standards. Revolutions only make sense if they serve a good purpose. In this case, our purpose is to get the best possible quality. At least that's what I'm interested in. Correct framerrate is correct framerate, and nothing will change it. If the framerate is wrong, it implies the rip might have quality problems, such as bad or no deinterlacing. And if you donwload such file, you can't correct it yourself, because the quality is already low - it is fucked up irreversibly. Period.

Learn to rip properly READ the guides you've been pointed to specifically :
http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main3.htm
and http://www.doom9.org/gknot-basics-divx5.htm
paying particular attention to framerates, cropping and aspect ratios
In the meantime, are you sharing these as well as re-ripping, because that it utterly pointless, it would be better to rip them preoperly then share the correct file for each movie.

I added a picute for comparison. I used these specs
512x384 (1.33:1) [=4:3]
Bitrate 1286 kb/s
29.970
0.218 bits/pixel
699 MB
Right now I am trying the 23 that you suggested.

Your BPP is way too high for this kind of material, you need to up the resolution and ENCODE AT THE RIGHT FRAME RATE.
That's my last word to you on this subject Deadbeat, you know better than me (I just think I know it all ) so I'll keep quiet from now on.

You really should encode them at 23FPS, NOT 29 - the only time it should be 29 is if you're taking it DIRECTLY from a VHS. To give a short explanation, you're duplicating frames unnecessarily, and it degrades quality.

True, but to clarify that; only when its your initial uncompressed capture stage! after you've captured, when your performing the compression/encoding stage, you should encode at 23.3fps by using the same IVTC method as you would with a DVD (FORCEFILM probably won't work ). Problem is its very tricky with VHS, sometimes you loose frames but that's only due to the lossy analogue to digital stage in most cases.
With a digital to digital copy its a piece of cake either IVTC or at the FORCEFILM stage

I used force film since it was a DVD.
I Got this psecs at 23 and changing the resolution
DivX 5.0
01:09:13 (99,564 fr)
608x464 (1.31:1) [=38:29]
1288 kb/s
0.190 bits/pixel
Audio
0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
118 kb/s (59/ch, stereo) VBR
I then did a visual comparison using VLC. To be honest outside of cropping I
I could see a major difference.
Also I have a question about audio format. I guess I should post in another area

Why did you keep resolution so low? Your bitrate and BPP are still too high.
It looks like that film could (and should) be encoded ~ the high 6??x??? mark or at 700x??? which would look MUCH better, again BPP is to high for the resolution, did you actually read ANY of those guides??!!
What's the audio question

I'll do 700 for you. I did notice the film was not completely cropped, but I was only able to pick it up in VLC. I also posted a question on DVD2AVI in hardware software forum you might be able to answer

I've answered that, out of interest, did you read any of the guides?
and are you actually sharing anything or should all these get moved into the dead film section?
