Death Race 2000, Paul Bartel's 1975 cheapo satire about a futuristic international sport--an anything-goes car race where drivers score points for hitting pedestrians--stars David Carradine as a hero behind the wheel and Sylvester Stallone as his nemesis. The film is clever and macabre enough as a modernist satire, but finally overplays its hand in grim, decadent humour. The sets are gloriously artificial, and former Andy Warhol-star Mary Woronov is in sexy, comic form. --Tom Keogh

In another case of movies that don't need to be remade and the directors who have no right to remake them, Paul W.S. Anderson will write and direct Death Race 3000, a remake of the cult Roger Corman classic Death Race 2000.

The original, directed by Paul Bartel, starred David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone in a race where drivers accumulated points for running over pedestrians.

Anderson's got a different take. "The original was so much about decimating pedestrians that the actual race was almost irrelevant, and I want to restore that," Anderson said. "Set in 2020, ours is an ultraviolent, no-holds-barred race with heavily armed Escalades, Ferraris and Aston Martins."
