Just think about it - all of us that lived to experience that golden age of video ( early 80's , in which a lot of the 70's stuff was rereleased on video) , hold that period in high respect.....

But is it not like , in retrospect, we're being to mild ...??? :?

Come on ! try and name 10 ace horror flicks from the 70's.... :P

Yeah , true - it's hard to re-imagine what impact some of the movies had back then ( for instance the don't-fall-sleep-challenge Halloween :wacky: )...

Well....let's see now ;

Dawn of the dead ....gotta have that one in....
eh...2 or 3 hammer/amicus flicks still hold up today....
ehm.....
aha ! Jaws ! Though more of a thriller ... :?
Zombi 2 ? was that '79 or was it '80?
erm....
 ...
....
Exorcist ? (I'm desperate now)...
eh...

Oh go ahead and laugh ! Let's have your list then.....
What is one supposed to nominate ?
TCM ? Not my style.....Halloween ? ZZzzz... wicker man ? Nah. Last house on left ? merely shock value - nothing else going for it.......like soooooo much from that period.....

Hey if it's just me and by all means take a shot at me :P

Try to name ten good ones from the 60s or the 90s. Go Ahead, I DARE YOU!

My top ten of the 70s:

TCM
Last House on the Left
Martin
Dawn of the Dead
The Exorcist
Fulci's Zombie (79)
Halloween (I want to hate too)
Friday the 13th Part 1 (Damn thats 1980 ain't it....)
Buio Omega (79)
(fill in favorite giallo here)

Ok that was harder than I thought.
What I learned?
The best decade for horror is 1976 to 1986.
Probably has the most good films in it.

:beerchug: to a tough one!

Okay, this is the place to list the top ten horror movies made in a decade, 70s, 80s, whatever. I'll be back with mine in a bit.

Phantasm

I was gonna do the 80s too, but its hard.

There's some obvious choices, but for me you've missed The Wickerman, The Omen, Alien (!!!), Carrie, Rabid, Eraserhead for starters, all of which are better than Halloween imo. Exorcist, although lots of people don't like has to be there for me. I didn't like it the first time I saw it but it was much better on repeat viewings. TCM is a must.

I haven't put much thought into that, but imo, that's already pushed Halloween out of a top ten placement (if i grab a few from yours which are obviously better :) ). If i had a think about it, i reckon it would easily go out of the top 20. Martin, Jaws, phantasm would go for me out of the top ten for definite.

I'll probably have made a list somewhere, but i'll try and do one when i've got a spare moment to think about it.

80s is hard because we forget which decade movies come form, and there's a lot of original ones as well as millions of clones, and there's no undisbuted movies in comparison to the 70s. There's obvious ones like Hellraiser, Return of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, near dark, etc. that people choose. There's likely to be a lot more variation in lists from that period than the 70s.

The Wicker Man is way down my list. Id put a lot of stuff ahead of it. The Omen was the last film I bumped. Alien was bumped just before it. Carrie and Eraserhead weren't really in contention. Rabid doesn't really belong on the same list as Shivers (its practically a remake). For me, it was one or the other and I chose Shivers.

You wimps :P

Pre 70's : Hammer stuff - can't name them right now though

70's :

Qualified:
Dawn of the dead
Alien
Jaws .....

Under consideration :
Some more hammer/amicus stuff
exorcist
and Zombi (2)

The rest is .......aw..what rest ?

80's :

Now we're talking 8)
Qualified:
The Thing
Aliens
Predator (yeah I know these are more action/sf flicks)
Evil dead 2
a Chinese ghost story ( your loss if you still haven't seen it)
the Fog
the Shining
.... and Urotsukidoji - Legend of the overfiend......yeah I know it's a friggin cartoon .... :P EAT ME :P
It had more of a (lasting) impact on me than the bulk of other so called classics.....

Under consideration :
Hellraiser 2
Braindead
and Friday the 13th part 6 ( :o did he just say that ? :P yes I did :P )

I'm sure I forgot a lot of them.....

and then ....
90's : (oh dear  )

Qualified:
In the mouth of madness
Tremors
.....ehrm.....

Under consideration :
From dusk till dawn
Event Horizon
Deep rising
.. eh.....

I think you better leave it there forever.

oh dear lord, your even worse than chadman! That list is dreadfully incomplete and off on a tangent so much its a friggin' triangle :o So much for taste. Event horizon too... LOL, you mention a paul anderson movie and didn't even mention Ringu, Candyman, etc. The 90s sucked, but they didn't suck that much.

On the 80s stuff, Aliens isn't really a trueblooded horror film, if at all. Predator is even less of a horror film. You haven't even mentioned Near Dark, Evil Dead 1, hell not even Ghostbusters.... At least that has ghosts in it so its more on target than Predator. Friday the 13th was shit, all of them. Speaking of Bad Taste, that's one people don't mention enough ;) oh well Ohgo, at least you don't have maxpayne's taste in movies, oh wait... he doesn't have one :D :wacky:

And dropping Alien from a list chadman? Wow, there goes your rights to speak in public again mr :)... that's like mentioning a Friday the 13th movie in your li... oh your still here ohgod?

This is why people don't post top ten lists... people end up making fun
okay, i'm done :)

/me initiates bender's "laughing at other people's misfortune" laugh and runs off into the sunset

Pah !

Predator had gore , aliens had gore and suspense..... who cares what the setting is.....

As for the crap that is Near dark ..... ZzzzZZz....it might make the top 200....barely..... :P
Evil dead 1 is in there in the top 25 or so.....we somewhat cool
Ringu pffff..... a lot of asian stuff is overrated - won't start that discussion again ...
Bad taste......meh.....neutral really - nothing in particular with or against it , bar the fact that a lot of people tend to rate it higher after Jackson's LOTR work then they did before it ..... Hypocrites

and ...ah yeah candyman.......
Knew I forgot a few...

I also love Notti del terrore :wacky:
....and Nightmare on elm street part 3 just kicks ass :P ....(yeah the original is okayish too (*don't swallow that keyboard * - would digest so hard  :P ))

The Wicker Man
Dawn of the dead
Bloodsucking Freaks
The Exorcist
Halloween
Eraserhead
Zombie 2 (aka Zombie flesheaters)
Alien

80's
-----

Cannibal holocaust
Nekromantik
Evil Dead 1+2
The Thing
Hellraiser
ReAnimator
American Werewolf In London
Near Dark

Spoorloos

90's
-----

Ringu
Candyman
Braindead
Tesis
Audition
The Story of Ricky
Army of Darkness
Tetsuo II
Heavenly Creatures
The frighteners

00's
-----

Shaun of the dead
Dawn of the dead remake (yeah me too, although it's not a patch on the original, the 00's haven't been great for horror flicks)
Dead and breakfast
Ichi the killer
Battle royale
Dead End
House of 1000 corpses
Bubba Ho-Tep
Dark Water
Electric Dragon 80.000 V

It's not really a top 10 (I'd have to put some thought into it then!) just some films I enjoyed from each decade
