Installation was the smoothest and easiest install I can remember, congrats to Suse for making it as painless as it was.

I haven't been able to get my NTL (cable) connection recognised (nor running) yet, but I didn't have muich time to play last night, I'll take a look later, any pointers as to where I should be looking?

OK, quick update.

I'm a bit lost now :(
I can access my router's configuration screen (so the network card is obviously working) but I still can't get online.

Any Ideas??

 sorry i dont know about cable modems.

does your provider automatically assign the ip address and dns servers when you connect the modem?

launch the command "ifconfig". in the "eth0" part you should see an IP address (field "inet addr:")

can you go online using ip addresses? e.g. for google try http://66.249.85.104 with the browser. if so, that's a dns problem. inside the file "/etc/resolv.conf" you should see a couple of lines like:
nameserver 123.123.123.123
nameserver 456.456.456.456

if not, try to find out the ip addresses of your DNS servers and put then inside /etc/resolv.conf using the sintax above.

It is not the DNS. It is his route. He does not have a default gateway.

I can conenct with the IP address, I've set my route to the IP address of my router (again), but I still can't connect with urls.

I've just had a look at resolve.conf and it's empty, that looks like it's the problem
FIXED !! :)

mmm, not sure about that ;)

I'm trying to install mplayer ATM and having a hard time finding all the dependant packages it seems to need, I need binary rpms for libmad etc, but (being new to the whole thing) I'm not sure whether I need specific SUSE compiles or what the difference between red hat and the various fedora core binaries are, will any old binary do?

I was looking at this guide, but it's incomplete with relation to suse 9.3

Yesssss, this is Suse. They stripped all the good stuff because of copyright problems.

This site looks good:

Btw, I changed from an rpm based Linux to Gentoo because RPM sucks. I cannot recommend Gentoo for beginners, but as far as I know you can use a Debian like apt system for suse. It would resolve most dependency problems automatically:

You could install a full mplayer (with codecs, etc.) with apt relatively easily (it's often the easiest way in SuSE).

Grab the apt and apt-libs rpms from here and install them: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/Su ... user-rbos/

After that, open up your /etc/apt/sources.list file and add these lines (I usually comment out the other lines first):
Code:
rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.2-i386 rpmkeys base update-drpm update-prpm update kde misc xorg x-ati mozilla samba3 ximian suser-rbos suser-jengelh suser-oc2pus suser-guru suser-gbv suser-kpietrz suser-obengs suser-tcousin suser-tux suser-scorot suser-sbarnin suser-ollakka funktronics packman packman-i686 kernel-of-the-day kraxel wine suse-people suse-projects kde3-stable kde-unstable security-prpm security
rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.2-i386 rpmkeys base update-drpm update-prpm update kde misc xorg x-ati mozilla samba3 ximian suser-rbos suser-jengelh suser-oc2pus suser-guru suser-gbv suser-kpietrz suser-obengs suser-tcousin suser-tux suser-scorot suser-sbarnin suser-ollakka funktronics packman packman-i686 kernel-of-the-day kraxel wine suse-people suse-projects kde3-stable kde-unstable security-prpm security
then run
Code:
apt-get update

Here's a copy of my working SuSE 9.2 /etc/apt/sources.list file:
Code:
# Uncomment the line below, in case you want to use SuSE's patch rpms.
# Read the information about patch rpms at http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm

# rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.2-i386 update-prpm security-prpm

# A very basic sources.list line. Fastest repository first.
# Remove "base" in case you are behind a
# slow connection. Fastest repository first.
# Visit the server to determine which apt components are provided.
#rpm ftp://mirrors.mathematik.uni-bielefeld. ... /suse/apt/ SuSE/9.2-i386 update security
#rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/ SuSE/9.2-i386 update security

# The list with all available components can be found at:
# Some components provide experimental software, select wisely!
# http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/S ... s.list.FTP

rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.2-i386 rpmkeys base update-drpm update-prpm
rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.2-i386 rpmkeys base update-drpm update-prpm

# Consult the link above if you want to include uri's for src rpms

Type
Code:
apt search rpmkey
to find the relevant gpg keys you need to install and then use
Code:
apt --no-checksig --no-post install <desired rpmkey rpm>
to import the gpg key (there's another way around this by changing the GPG line to false in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/gpg-checker.conf, but it is bad for security.

After that's done, a simple
Code:
apt-get install MPlayer-suite
will get you a full mplayer install with codecs. You'll probably also want to install synaptic so that you can graphically search for apps, etc.:
Code:
apt-get install synaptic

No time for the deep end eh PCA? I gotta say it was the learning curve that put me off too. Will get around to Linux again one day tho.

Time is the big issue for me, having to use workarounds to get even simple apps like mplayer working under suse when I'm not familliar with the OS is too much like hard work
