Effect or actuality? Some games aren't exactly 'horror' but can be pretty effective and obviously psychedelic in places.

Resident Evil was the first of a new wave, it wasn't really original but came along as the right thing at the right time.
Resident Evil 4 is stunning, there is nothing that's as distinctly horror that plays as good, period, I'm afraid to say, but given how good it is.

I never liked Silent Hill beyond the art work myself.

As for as psychadelic games go, I love Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Its not like zombie killing or anything (actually there are zombies in it like ocarina  ) , but its definitely dark as far as non-horror games go.
Another one like that, although more emphasis on the psychedelic and not as good a game, but still damn good is American McGee's Alice

Doom3 is not very good, no. The game is very poor and unoriginal, but it does have one of the best and most effective sound effect tracks if you have a good sound system, but its pretty deleteable.

Eternal Darkness is supposed to be good, but i've never played it.

Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver 1 were pretty good, as far as the sequels went beyond them i didn't like very much.

The PC/N64/Dreamcast version of Shadowman is pretty unique and really weird in places if you can make it through, the psx version was awful though, what a fuck up they made of that port.

Eternal darkness is excellent, the first time it bluescreens / wipes your memory card it freaks you out big time

Oh my word, completely forgot about that. If you've played that, there's no real point in doom3... its no where near as atmospheric as that game. Shame about AvP2 though :(

System Shock is a scifi FPS for the pc, was very original at the time, there's a sequel too:

I also loved the original Legacy Of Kain.

But one of my all time faves was Werewolves Of London on the Amstrad CPC 464 & Spectrum. Nothing better than running round at night as a werewolf and eating coppers.

Yeah the remake is better than the original (wow, did i just say that? :wacky:), but then again the fourth sequel is better than the first and the remake...

Alien Trilogy Playstation 1 - I stumbled across thie game a long time ago having never played a 3d shooter before, the music and environment are superbly eerie. A lot of the time I use the ol' igotpinkacidbootson cheat just to explore further. Magic.

lol, i remember that game... yeah it was okay i guess, but it really isn't anywhere near as good as the first AvP... you played that one? Check it out if not, that's how that game should have been done.
