This is an absolutely remarkable little film. It is a "documentary" about a leper colony made by a poet. The images are shocking yet the vision is beautiful. The lyrical depth is hardly unexpected given the personality of the author, but I would say that Farrokhzad's cinematic strength is quite surprising, with all the deliberate compositions and fast rhythmic cutting (often synched to background noise) that only serve to reinforce the message of the movie.

The file has been released by itakeumbrage@Karagarga. English subtitles are burned it. A few screenshots are available here.

Quote:
THE HOUSE IS BLACK, legendary Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad's rare documentary, has influenced many of the great directors of Iran's New Wave, including Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Abbas Kiarostami (The Wind Will Carry Us).

This haunting film about the leprosy colony in Tabriz, Iran is a compassionate portrait of forgotten people. Straightforward, yet sympathetic, The House Is Black affords dignity to its subjects, particularly through Farrokhzad's striking poem read in voice-over by herself. Farrokhzad's voice as a poet has inspired such internationally renowned directors as Chris Marker (La Jet?e, Sans Soleil) and Bernardo Bertolucci.

Quote:
In 1962, beloved and controversial poetess Forugh Farrokhzad made this short film on the grounds of a leper colony, presaging in 22 minutes the entirety of the Iranian new wave and the international quasi-genre of "poetic nonfiction." It's a blackjack of a movie, soberly documenting the village of lost ones with an astringently ethical eye, freely orchestrating scenes and simply capturing others, while on the soundtrack Farrokhzad reads her own poetry in a plaintive murmur?this in the same year as Vivre sa Vie and La Jet?e. (Chris Marker has long been a passionate fan, as has Abbas Kiarostami, whose The Wind Will Carry Us owes its title and climactic verse to Farrokhzad.) It was the only substantial piece of cinema Farrokhzad ever made. Five years later, having already attained near legendary status in Iran for her writing, she was killed in a car crash at the age of 32, guaranteeing her posthumous fame as a feminist touchstone for generations of angry Persian women.

Well, I would most certainly not look at it that way, but you're of course welcome to follow your own perspective... :?

Nah..lepers are funny to me, but being Japanese I am sure they will make it with some message behind it.
On a serious note..from the screens it looks impressive with the type of cinematography that I would expect from Terayama. At any rate it;s a great find and is probably underrated as with most of his movies and shorts.
For those interested in more of his work check this link out http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic.php?t=7682 that was released by Fitz a while back...A lot of people didn't "get" that one either which is sad.Cool this one is subbed in English.

Hell yeah!.. It's only in the US that no messages are allowed outside of commercials...

But, dear DxaKrator, I understand that you're probably very busy polluting the puritanical, but you may seriously benefit from reading my original post in a bit more detail: this movie is NOT Japanese, it does NOT have anything to do with Terayama, and the cinematography is about as dis-similar to Terayama's movies as it gets...

Cheers... :eatthis:

Man, I am imagining George W. saying something along these lines, and then sending the troops to Iran instead of Japan, or to Japan instead of Iran, or something like that...

In any case, I am glad you appreciate Terayama (I am sure George W. wouldn't). As you've probably noticed, I've released the English subs for Pastoral: to die in the country a few days ago...
