Well, it's encoded directly from high definition master and it was made specifically for HDTV. Also it's not a rip, but original DVD that I have.

Only to a point, DVD resolution is (IIRC) 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC).
if you rip in a resolution higher than that then you are getting the codec to interpolate the image (adding information that isn't there on the source)
IMHO Going over DVD resolution is pointless

a native higher resolution with a high enough bitrate, yes. A resized higher resolution from a smaller resolution, no, far worse, a high resolution with a lower bitrate (ie dvdrips that aren't rescaled down), no, once again far worse. Its all to do with the initial capture, if its captured at one res, it should never be higher than that. If its a newly mastered HDTV, then yes, its better to have that res initially, than to be sampled at the DVD res. Concerning rips of the 700mb variaty, basically you don't have enough information for each pixel and you get visual problems (blockiness/loss of detail/encoding artifacts), so you need to reduce the resolution to a size that fits your bitrate. Therefore you resize down to prevent these problems. Here an arbitary high resolution is bad, a lower res will be better quality. With HDTV sources, they are transmitted with a) a higher bitrate than dvd b) a higher resolution, so the quality of the picture is far superior to DVD which is a lower resolution and a lower bitrate. However, if you cap the bitrate, then your introducing a bottleneck and herein defeating the purpose of hdtv, you have to reduce the resolution to keep the quality up or you'll get problems. So to use TV release as an example, HDTV rips are rarely HDTV resolution, because they don't have the filesize/bitrate to support keeping the quality at that size, they are normally downsized and 350mb, but the quality is still good because its theoretically taking it from a digital source (the problem is that the amateur capturing devices used by tv rippers isn't as good as the capturing devices that create dvds by professional companies so its hit and miss). There are also often 700mb counterparts to tv rips, here the resolution is kept as the bitrate is significantly higher to support this. So to your question, arbitrarily no its not, its only better if you have an abundance of bitrate to maintain the quality of the initial HDTV capture. Now since this particular example has a low bitrate, it really should be resized down, scaling up is bad. Here are some examples of what its like to maintain the resolution, and to maintain the quality of HDTV (incidently i'd just posted this on another forum)
I hope that made sense
