Boris Karloff (1926 - 1968) |
Boris Karloff Nov. 23, 1887 - Feb. 2, 1969
Born William Henry Pratt, the son of a diplomat, he was educated at London University. Karloff's initial goal in life was to become a diplomat like his father.
But in 1909, Karloff, then twenty one, and still known as William Pratt, eloped with Olive Wilton, the first of his five wives, and left England for Canada.
After working as a labourer, he joined a series of touring theatre companies, where he became known as a skilled character actor, often donning heavy makeup and playing men many years older. At this time he changed his name to something more in keeping with his new vocation.
Within eight years, Karloff had appeared in forty five silent films for Universal Studios, among them 'The Last of the Mohicans', 'Forbidden Cargo' and an instalment in the popular 'Tarzan' series.
When Bela Lugosi refused to take a role in which he would have his face hidden by makeup and have no lines, the role of The Monster in 'Frankenstein' went to Boris Karloff. From then on, Karloff was in dozens of similar films.
He departed from the horror genre only a few times, once in the 1934 film, 'The Lost Patrol', and a few times on stage - for example, as Captain Hook in 'Peter Pan'. In the 1968 film, 'Targets', he parodied his earlier career.
He is also well known for providing the voice to the 1965 cartoon version of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.
Karloff was known within the film industry for his great kindness and gentleness of manner; he was also central to the foundation of the Screen Actors Guild.
After battling emphysema for a number of years, Boris Karloff died at his home in England in February 1969.

| Ghoul, The (1933) | | Review: It takes a while to get going but it is a gem of a horror film once that happens. The first part although slow and the acting melodramatic does have a nice atmosphere. Once The Ghoul gets going you can see that Boris Karloff can do more with silence then most actors can do with dialogue. He is marvelous like in his earlier films Frakenstein and The Mummy where although he is mostly silent steals the film from the actors with lines.. He has a very expressive face. This film which I believe was lost for many years is a great find for early horror movie buffs. Watch it some night with the lights out and you will not be disappointed.

Quote: | Made in the golden years of television and filled with suspense, this collection is a treat for fans of Karloff, who also stars in nine of the episodes included here.
|
"Good evening. Tonight I'm going to tell you another strange and unusual story of the unexplainable which lies behind... ...The Veil."
TV.com
Info: 25 minutes / black & white Mono Audio Originally on: Syndicated Premiered: September 1, 1958 Last Aired: September 1, 1958
Host: Boris Karloff. Creator and Producer: Frank P. Bibas. Executive Producer: Hal Roach Jr. Directors : Frank P. Bibas, Paul Landres Original Music: Adwin Astley, Leo Klatzkin
Quote: | Horror legend Boris Karloff hosted and performed in this never-aired anthology series. Each program opened with the camera entering through a huge archway, pulling in on Karloff who's seated and reading by an oversized, blazing fireplace. Karloff stands before the flames and says, "Good evening. Tonight, I'm going to tell you another strange and unusual story of the unexplainable which lies behind The Veil".
The series was created and produced by Frank P. Bibas, who had worked in television and film since 1950. He had an interest in the supernatural and decided that the supposed "true" stories of the paranormal he'd come across would make for a great series.
The show was made for Hal Roach Studios and filmed on their lot in Culver City, CA. Unfortunately for The Veil, the timing couldn't be worse. Roach's studio went into bankruptcy and the series was never even pitched to a network. The eleven completed episodes never aired as they were filmed until being released on VHS/DVD by "Something Weird" video.
Strangely, the segments did turn up in the 1970's when various episodes were stitched together and syndicated to local TV stations as "movies". They were compiled under the titles Destination Nightmare, Jack the Ripper and The Veil.
Karloff performed in all but one episode. That episode, Jack the Ripper, featured Boris in the usual open and close, but was not shot for the series. It's believed Roach Studios picked it up from an obscure British TV show as a cost-saving move.
Information for this summary is based on the liner notes for the DVD release. |

Info: 25 minutes / black & white Mono Audio Premiered: 1960 Last Aired: Unknown Veteran horror film writer/director Curt Siodmak created this eerie anthology series.
Quote: | The shows were set at decaying 13 Demon Street where the host, an unnerving and haggard Lon Chaney, Jr., opened and closed each episode. As he says in the show's introduction, "I am condemned to live here, to suffer on this earth eternally as a punishment for my sin. It is said that no greater outrage was ever committed by any mortal. But should I find a crime more heinous, my terrible punishment will end!" Chaney apparently didn't as the series never found a buyer and never aired. Produced in 1960 at Stockholm, Sweden's Nordisk Tonefilm studio, an unlucky thirteen episodes were filmed. At least some of the footage was salvaged when Herbert L. Strock was brought in to piece together a feature film (The Devil's Messenger) from three of the episodes. The host segments with Chaney were discarded and replaced with scenes featuring Chaney as the devil linking the stories together. Several of the episodes have been released by Something Weird video. |

Quote: | Thriller (a. k. a. Boris Karloff's Thriller) was an hour-long TV Horror anthology series that originally aired on NBC from 1960 to 1962. Horror fans who grew up in the 1960's and 1970's were nearly enraptured with the content and structure of this show. Indeed, in his non-fiction book on horror, Danse Macabre, Stephen King calls Thriller "the best horror series ever put on TV" (224; 1983 ed). At the beginning of each hour, Hollywood's master of the macabre himself, Boris Karloff, would set the tone and prime the viewers for frightful and chilling dramatizations based on the works of some of the era's greatest writers in the genre - writers like Robert E Howard, Cornell Woolrich, Richard Matheson, and Robert Bloch. Each episode was shot in eerie black and white and offered at least one story, with a few episodes dividing the hour between two or three shorter plays.
As with any Horror program, of course, there are a few clunker episodes that do not quite measure up to the rest, and Horror fans who are purists will probably be annoyed by the handful of episodes that are crime-based "thrillers" - most of which were produced and broadcast at the beginning of the series' original run - rather than stories of the ghastly or macabre. When compared with today's graphically gory product, Thriller might seem a little tame to modern audiences. But overall, the show has stood the test of time and can still inspire chills and goose bumps. |
